GUEST LECTURE by PRABIR DARIPA

A guest lecture by Prof. Prabir Daripa was organised by the ISM Chapter of Petrotech Society in the Golden Jubilee Lecture Theatre on 10th Aug 2010 at 3:30 pm. The topic of the lecture was “Enhanced Oil Recovery through ASP flooding”. The event was attended by more than 300 people, including students of both the Petroleum Engineering Department and the Mathematics Department, as well as eminent professors of the college.

Prof. Prabir Daripa was introduced initially by Prof. Sukumar Laik (Dean, ISM). He threw some light on his glorious academic record: B. Tech from I.I.T. Kharagpur in Mechanical Engg, Ms. in fluid mechanics from Brown University, Ms. in applied maths from Brown University, PhD in fluid mechanics and Post. Doc. in computational mathematics from Courant Institute (New York University).

Prof. Daripa started his lecture with a humble acknowledgement of his simplicity. He then went into the technical domain of his presentation which included the basics of EOR, design of ASP Flooding process, problems of EOR and their mathematical simulations. In mathematical modelling he invoked the Bucklay Leveret Model for Porous Model Flow & Two layer Hele-Shaw flows. He explained the Fingering problem in the reservoir in great detail and tried to moot its solution. But he further accepted that his work wasn’t complete and the solution was yet not obtained. He encouraged the students, and the professors, to take up the topic and reach the solution.

After the presentation, there was a very interactive question & answer session initiated by Prof. T. Kumar (Director, ISM). He urged the students to volunteer themselves for the project that had been started by Dr. Daripa.

The next question which pertained to the boundary condition of the mathematical simulation was raised by Prof. P. S. Rao of the Applied Mathematics Department. In a nutshell, the session became very reciprocating from both the sides and there was a great deal of involvement of students. The lecture instilled a new vigour of taking up upcoming problems of reservoir management among students.

Professor S.K. Patra, AMN Ghosh Chair, gave the concluding remarks. He remarked on the exceptional points of the paper presented and commented on the practical application and laboratory tests that the theory must go through. He encouraged the students at ISM to perhaps carry out the required experiments to test the theory.

The Head of the Department, Dr. A.K Pathak delivered the vote of thanks. He heaped praise on Dr. Daripa for taking time out of his busy schedule to deliver the Guest Lecture at ISM. He alsoencouraged Dr. Daripa to facilitate more interaction between the departments of Texas A&M university and the Dept. of Petroleum Engineering at ISM. Finally he presented a memento to Dr. Daripa as a symbol of the Department’s and the Petrotech Society ISM Student Chapter’s gratitude. He also extended a big thank you to the organizing team, especially Dr. Keka Ojha, convenor Petrotech Society ISM Student Chapter who played a key role in facilitating the guest lecture.
